San Diego State got more than 57,000 undergraduate applications for the fall 2007. That's a record number for the university, and it's the highest number of applications for any CSU campus. SDSU spokesman Ethan Singer says its also significant because the number of high school graduates in California next spring is falling flat. He says prospective students are attracted to the sun and student life in San Diego.

Singer: San Diego is a destination city, so there's no question that we benefit from that. But the fact the student body is as diverse as it is, is also a major factor. And student life is very good on campus.

Singer says SDSU has done a better job in down-playing its party-school reputation and marketing its academic programs, faculty and research projects. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
