Congressman Duncan Hunter Announces Presidential Bid

Audio

Aired 4/19/09

Tom Fudge : San Diego County Congressman Duncan Hunter says he will run for president of the United States. He made his announcement yesterday on San Diego bay with the Midway aircraft carrier in the background. Hunter’s announcement that he would seek the Republican nomination surprised many people. The congressman admitted that he did not consult with Republican bigwigs before making his decision.

Hunter is a very successful member of Congress who now chairs the House Armed Services Committee. He is a decorated Vietnam War veteran. But, few people outside of San Diego or Washington know who he is. Can he possibly compete with the name recognition of people like John McCain or Bill Frist?
