Maureen Cavanaugh: Last time I went to the grocery store, the person at the checkout said “Wow,” at the total of my order because it certainly didn't look like I'd bought that much. He scrolled back the price readout to see how the bill got so big, but neither one of us could figure it out.

My experience is not an isolated one; even the federal government admits the price of food is way up. In many places around the world, the situation is much worse. Rising food prices have sparked riots in Haiti, Egypt, and the Philippines.

This morning, we want to get a better idea of what's behind the increase in food prices and how it's affecting us here in San Diego.
