Maureen Cavanaugh : San Diegans may think they know a lot about aircraft carriers, after all we see them all the time. In fact, the USS Midway carrier is now one of our big tourist attractions in San Diego Bay.

But while we're familiar with the tearful deployments and the festive homecoming, most of us are not so knowledgeable about what goes on in the middle. What is it like to live and work on board an aircraft carrier with more than 5,000 other people for a six month deployment to a war zone?
