Local Foods Plentiful at County’s 30 Farmers Markets

Audio

Aired 4/19/09

Audio will be posted later today.

Tom Fudge : Farmer's markets are an interesting thing. There's something very genuine and even ancient about them. You imagine this is the way farmers first sold their produce. They set up a commercial stand in town and people came directly to them to buy food.

Today the food industry has wholesalers and food processors that bring the food to you at the grocery store, sometimes in forms that are barely recognizable as the things they were made from.

But at the farmer's market you get the real deal, sold to you direct by the producer. The only thing about farmers' markets you could possibly criticize is the fact that their customers are very often society's sophisticates - the people who have plenty of money and the time to think about stuff like food miles, nutrician and organic farming practices.

That's why it's encouraging to see farmers' markets pop up in places like City Heights.
