A program that allows disabled people and low-income seniors to get care in their home is on the chopping block in the governor's budget. The governor's plan would slash more than a quarter-of-a-billion dollars from the In-Home Supportive Services program. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
The governor's budget would lower the hours and wages for the workers who provide care. It would also reduce services for some 83-thousand people who depend on the program. In-Home Supportive Services pays Terry Ashby a stipend so she can care for her disabled daughter. Ashby says Governor Schwarzenegger doesn't realize the importance of this program.
Ashby: He has no clue on what it's like, he's out of touch. And a lot of people don't understand what goes into taking care of someone until they actually do it.
The governor says he must reduce spending across the board because of California's massive budget deficit. Democrats say a cuts-only budget is irresponsible. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
