San Diego City Schools Brace Themselves for Layoffs

Tom Fudge: Yesterday was one tough day for the San Diego Unified School board. But the action they finally took could make things even tougher for local students. California's second largest school district made cuts of $80 million. This was a response to a state budget proposal that would cut more than $4 billion from education spending across the state.

If the San Diego cuts actually take place, and they may not, the school board would have to eliminate nearly one in ten certified positions in the district . Those positions include teachers, nurses, counselors and principals. KPBS education reporter Ana Tintocalis attended the school board meeting yesterday, and she joins me now.
