City Considering Raising Service Fees

The San Diego city council budget committee began the process of considering an increase to certain fees today. KPBS reporter Katie Orr has details.

San Diego’s Financial Office presented the budget committee with a proposed General Fund User Fee policy. The policy will be used to evaluate the fees charged for a variety of city services, like renting a city owned meeting room. The Mayor could include fee increases in his coming budget to help cover the city’s budget deficit. Independent Budget Analyst Andrea Tevlin says her office supports the user fee policy.

Tevlin: This is the first step toward identifying to what degree programs that were… their costs were originally intended to be fully recovered through the users of the services are actually in fact perhaps be subsidized by the city’s general fund.

Tevlin says such subsidies might be taking money away from other city services. The budget committee sent the user fee policy to the full council.
