The first outage occurred shortly after 8 a.m. and affected up to 2,162 addresses in parts of Carlsbad, La Costa, south Vista and west San Marcos, the utility reported on its Web site. Electricity was expected to be restored in that area around 11 a.m.

The second outage occurred around 9:15 a.m. and affected up to 3,374 addresses in parts of Encinitas, Cardiff by the Sea and Olivenhain, according to the utility, which estimated power would be restored there by noon.

The first outage was blamed on a suspected problem with overhead lines, while the second was caused by a car crash, SDG&E reported.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
