A new seatless bicycle made in San Diego lets you run rather than ride on it -- outdoors. The ElipitiGo’s unique design won a prestigious technology award.
EliptiGo is part bike, part elliptical machine and all new in outdoor fitness equipment.
An elite runner from Coronado, who wanted to run outside without impact to his injured knees, designed it.
“It involves your legs, your heart your core,” said Adam Zinn of ElipitGo.
What’s missing is place for you to sit and ride.
“There’s no seat, so you’re basically standing up and peddling the whole time,” said Zinn.
The hybrid bike has two 20-inch wheels, eight gears and hand brakes like a mountain bike. One rider ran it up a 20 percent grade to mount Soledad, and then ran it 25 miles an hour on a flat road.
Despite it’s $2,200 price tag, EliptiGo is catching on in several states.
It recently won a San Diego’s Most Innovative New Product Award.
“It’s like the academy awards of innovations,” said Duane Roth, CEO of Connect, a consortium for inventors and technology companies, who sponsors the prestigious yearly awards.
More than 800 local inventors are judged on product innovation in several categories for the awards.
“They are judged on new products that were developed in San Diego and has their first customer sale in the past year” said Roth.
