Poor Cardiff Kook. The statue of a surfer on Coast Hwy 101 in Cardiff-by-the-Sea has suffered many indignities over the years and now...a severed ear. In celebration of Vincent Van Gogh's birthday, the Kook has been decked out as the painter, complete with a bandaged ear and a bottle of absinthe on hand to ease the pain.

The Kook holds a palatte in one hand and a paint brush in the other. An easel was welded to the front of the surfboard and on it is a post-impressionistic painting of the view at hand. Carlsbad artist and editor of the website Carlsbad Crawl, Bryan Snyder, is the man who transformed the Kook with just one assistant to help him. Check out the level of detail...

Snyder went so far as to include the actual severed ear in his tableau, along with a bottle of absinthe for comfort. Van Gogh was an absinthe devotee.
