San Diego Card Rooms Allowed To Add Tables

The City Council today voted unanimously, and without public opposition, to allow the two card rooms that operate in San Diego to add two more tables each.

The Palomar Card Club and Lucky Lady Casino, both located on El Cajon Boulevard, had been limited by municipal ordinance to nine tables, in conformance with state law. However, California raised the limit last year, according to Councilwoman Marti Emerald.

The card rooms offer locations where people can play Texas Hold 'Em poker, Pai Gow, Bacarat and Blackjack.

Council President Tony Young said the businesses have operated responsible and generally been good neighbors.

The ordinance limits the number of card room tables operating at a given time citywide to 22, effectively preventing the establishment of a third such business within city limits.

A big decision awaits some voters this July as the race for San Diego County’s Supervisor District 1 seat heats up. Are you ready to vote? Check out the KPBS Voter Hub to learn about the candidates, the key issues the board is facing and how you can make your voice heard.
