Construction superintendent Joe Carton gave a short blessing as San Diego Habitat for Humanity began a 12-month project that will result in new single-family homes for low-income people in Imperial Beach.
The faith-based group broke ground Wednesday for four homes that will be located on Florida Street. People who qualify will be able to buy them "at cost," and they'll enjoy the lowest interest rate in town: Zero percent.
Diana Twadell, a board member of San Diego Habitat, said they aim to help people who can't otherwise afford a home.
"They are people who are typically low-income, but they are steadily employed," she said, adding, "they have to have good credit."
Habitat for Humanity has built 149 homes in San Diego County so far. The four single-family homes in Imperial Beach will be about 1,300 square feet in size. Imperial Beach Mayor Jim Janney sees the project as a neighborhood improvement.
"In this case we're standing on an empty lot, and we're going to be able to provide four homes for it," he said.
Habitat for Humanity has just completed building 20 single-family homes in Oceanside. Twadell said there are more projects to come.
"One's a very big one that we should be announcing in the next month or two," she said, declining to offer any other details.
