Isari Flower Studio and Event Design does weddings and centerpieces for business meetings but it also offers classes in culinary bouquets and preaches the benefits of horticultural therapy.

While another agricultural area of the country might be known as the breadbasket of America, San Diego County is most certainly the nation's flower pot. San Diego ranks as the number one nursery and floral county in America and has for decades. But it's one thing to live in an area that can grow lots of flowers, it's another thing to know what to do with them when you take that greenery indoors. Isari Flower Studio and Event Design in Solana Beach is one of a number of floral studios around town trying to reacquaint San Diegans with the scent, color, design, and even the taste of flowers.

Tam Ashworth, owner and floral stylist of Isari Flower Studio says, "Every month we do a flower arranging class based off of the season and the theme, last month we had peony class, this month we're going to be doing floral vignettes. And then we have culinary creations coming up with some flowers that can be in the cooking as well as in the flower arranging."

According to Morgan Jenkins of Isaris Flower Studio, "Horticulture therapy is a profession and also an idea that's practiced in the industry. It's really for people to reconnect with nature and for floral designers it's like left brain development, that creative aspect of designing with flowers so you get to relax, you get to actually work with nature which a lot of us in our everyday lives don't get to do. If you don't have a garden outside it's about bringing the garden in. It's working with those petals, it's being stimulated by colors, being stimulated by textures and it's also a learning process too,... we all want to get back to nature that's why we love hikes that's why we love flowers. Designing with flowers is that relaxation. and taking the time out of your busy day to do so."

If you are thinking of working with edible plants and flowers, make sure that what you plan to use is safe and not tainted with pesticides. Here is a list of some flowers you can use in cooking, and some specific information on marigolds, and cultivating edible flowers in your garden.
