DNC Leader Urges Filner To Resign

Aired 7/26/13 on KPBS News.

The chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee is calling on San Diego Mayor Bob Filner to resign after four more women said they were targets of his sexual advances.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee is calling on San Diego Mayor Bob Filner to resign after four more women said they were targets of his sexual advances.

Florida congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz leads the DNC. She says the misconduct Filner has been accused of is, quote, "reprehensible and indefensible."

Wasserman Schultz says there is, quote, "no place for this type of conduct in the workplace and certainly not in our city halls and public offices."

Filner is a former Democratic congressman who's now accused by seven women of making unwanted sexual advances.

Leaders of the San Diego Democratic party are urging the mayor to quit.

Filner is everything that is wrong with politics. From the way he treated his attorneys to the way he appears to treat women. Man is caveman in a modern society in my opinion. For the sake of the city Bob, step down and walk into the sunset. You are done. Be gone.

I didn't realize this was not just a local Democratic policy, but DNC!

So 1 count of sexual harassment can be ignored by the DNC.

2 is fine.

3 is ok.

4 is acceptable.

5 is tolerable.

6 is straining.

7 is intolerable (hard to sweep under the rug) .

I'm glad other Democratic politicians now have a firm number.

Abuse 6 women and you're a dandy. 7 and you're done.

CaDef, your posts are not being fair nor accurate.

You say "counts" of sexual harassment.

"1 count ...."

"2 counts ...."

etc.

The problem is, what do you mean by "count"?

Do you think one ACCUSATION is enough to ouster someone?

There are accusations, convictions, admissions, charges, allegations, eye-witness accounts, hearsay, civil lawsuits, etc., etc., etc.

You're playing dirty by ignoring the various stages of this, the complexity of what's legal and what isn't, what's hearsay and what isn't, and you are cramming it all into one vague box of "charges" in order to slam the party.

This is not as simple as you are making it.

It started with hearsay and no witnesses or accusers coming forward.

The Democratic Party was RESPONSIBLE for using restraint at that point.

Then, we slowly saw accusers coming forward, some with tangible evidence like an email.

Of course people's positions on this will change as the fluid situation changes, it is not because people think 1-6 times are OK and the seventh is bad.

You made no secret you hated Filner even before this whole scandal began.

You thought he should be recalled before the first wiff of sexual harassment ever came to light.

For you, one allegation regardless of who it was from and what evidence there would be to back it up would have been enough to call for him to resign.

So be a little reasonable here, I am calling for him to resign as well but my position has evolved as EVIDENCE and WITNESSES and actual VICTIMS have come forward and I have found them credible.

Are people not allowed to weigh evidence before demanding someone be burned at the stake anymore ??

I too have changed my position on Mayor Filner. When this whole thing first came to light, I felt that we should wait until there was more evidence brought forth and actual, known people making the accusations rather than hearsay.

As this scenario has evolved, so too has my opinion.

The evidence is there. The witnesses have come forward and have become public. And the history is being told.

Now, it is time for Mr. Filner to resign and deal with this situation without dragging our city into his issues.

Defender, what did you expect from the party that promotes baby killing? A moral compass?

Well said Eddie89.

Duck,

I have never "hated" Filner. What I am ardently opposed to is abuse of power and corruption by ANY politician.

Scandal after scandal broke well before the sexual harassment charges.

From the tourism scandal to the Paris trip scandal, to the furniture scandal to using his body guards to kick people out of meetings, to being overly combative with the City Council/City Attorney, and the most serious of all the FBI corruption investigation into bribe taking from developers.

And remember he's only been in office for six months. Could you imagine what another 3.5 years would bring?

It isn't JUST about the sexual abuse scandal, although that makes it so much worse.

CaliforniaDefender, you got it right on the money. Problem is that he is not going to resign under any circumstances. We're stuck with him for a while. I'm guessing, it will go to court (with the recall underway, I hope)... and, after he's done trying to discredit his accuser(s), he'll be convicted. He'll offer more apologies... but, still not resign, claiming he's getting better.

Filner is one horrible leader and EVERY Democrat and/or liberal should be pissed as hell for what he is doing to the city AND the Democratic party.

The recall won't be cheap. Is there really any other way?
