SAN DIEGO (AP) -- San Diego's mayor is proposing a new law allowing medical marijuana dispensaries to operate in commercial and industrial areas.

U-T San Diego says Bob Filner's plan, announced Monday, would permit pot shops in a broad area so long as they are located at least 600 feet from schools, parks, playgrounds and each other.

Each clinic would pay a $5,000 annual permit and pay a 2-percent tax on sales.

The mayor wouldn't permit vending machines to sell pot in the clinics -- a concept floated earlier this month.

Filner's plan is only the latest of several attempts by San Diego officials to regulate marijuana dispensaries. It's expected to go before the City Council next month.
