Breastfeeding Mothers Stage San Diego 'Nurse-In' Protest

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Calling it a "nurse-in," a group of breastfeeding mothers staged a protest against what they say is discrimination by a San Diego County school district.

U-T San Diego reports a few dozen moms demonstrated Wednesday outside Poway Unified's offices.

The protest was organized by Rachel Rainbolt who says she was discriminated against by a teacher who told her that breastfeeding her 1-year-old son during a one-on-one parent-teacher conference regarding her home-schooled 7-year-old son was inappropriate.

Rainbolt said the day after the conference she got a call from the district saying her older son could no longer attend a monthly group presentation class because of the incident.

She filed a complaint with the state based on California law that allows breastfeeding in public, but the state's Department of Fair Employment sided with the district.
