San Diego Congressman Randy Duke Cunningham pleaded guilty in federal court today to accepting more than $2 million in bribes from military contractors. The bribes ranged from cash to a Rolls-Royce. Cunningham also admitted he evaded taxes on the bribes. KPBS reporter Amita Sharma has details.
Cunningham looked somber and gaunt as he muttered the words guilty twice to charges. Cunningham admitted that he conspired to commit honest services fraud, tax evasion and bribery. The bribes were paid to Cunningham through checks totaling $1 million, cash, rugs, furniture, a Rolls-Royce, even a graduation party for his daughter.
U.S. Attorney Carol Lam called Cunningham's crime "one of unprecedented magnitude and extraordinary audacity." Reporting from federal court, Amita Sharma, KPBS news.
