One of the groups leading the charge against federal legislation that would crack down on illegal immigration is the Catholic Church. Nationwide - and statewide - clergy are speaking out for the undocumented among us. Sacramento reporter Marianne Russ has more.
At Sacramento's Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, the largest mass is the Spanish one on Sunday afternoons. Rector Father James Murphy says it's only natural the church should stand up for immigrants. He took part in a weekend protest against what he calls severe immigration reform - building a border wall - and cracking down on employers of illegal immigrants:
Murphy: If it comes into law apparently, that measure that was passed by the house would make it illegal for us to serve Hispanics who are illegal. We would be breaking the law in just being Christians to those people.
Murphy says statewide priests are talking to their congregations about the issue. There's a national effort underway as well. He says the church isn't trying to get involved in politics, but notes it's a basic tenet of the Catholic faith to welcome the stranger.
