Cowles Mountain

At 1,591 feet, Cowles Mountain is the highest point within the San Diego city limits.

At 1,591 feet, Cowles Mountain is the highest point within the San Diego city limits.

It’s also an urban hiker’s dream, with four well-maintained trails offering a moderately challenging three-mile round trip featuring switchbacks and spectacular 360-degree views – some of the best views in Southern California. From the summit you can see all the way from the Cuyamaca Mountains to Catalina Island.

Mission Trails Regional Park rangers and San Diego Natural History Museum docents offer special full moon walks and sunrise hikes on the winter and summer solstices. Named after an early San Diego rancher, George Cowles (pronounced kōls), this San Diego Treasure is easily accessible from Navajo Road in San Carlos. For directions, click here .
