Low-income San Diegans with a good driving record can now get a break on auto insurance. An affordable state-sponsored car insurance program has been expanded to include San Diego and seven other California counties. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.
California law requires drivers to have insurance. But many low-income residents can't afford it.
The California Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program offers inexpensive liability coverage for drivers who make less than $24,500 a year.
Nicole Vinh is with the California Department of Insurance. She says eligible people must be classified as good drivers.
Vinh: Meaning having no more than one at fault property damage only accident, or one point for a moving violation in the past three years.
