In San Diego County, some stores, restaurants and businesses are closed or closing as employees and customers stay home, many taking part in an economic boycott designed to show the impact immigrants -legal or illegal-have on the national economy.

Tom Brown of Sierra Pacific West Construction says many of his workers did elect to honor the day. He says his company has adjusted its scheduling to stop work on some projects.

San Diego Metropolitan Transit spokesman Luis Gonzales says ridership is significantly less than usual this morning.

San Diego School District officials are still tallying attendance figures. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis says teachers at San Diego High School have observed smaller classes than normal.

In Tijuana, KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson says the normally busy border is nearly
