The San Diego School Board decides Tuesday whether a downtown charter school can establish its own separate school to provide independent study programs. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Cortez Hill Academy is a college-preparatory high school that outperforms many schools in San Diego. Now the academy's principal, Mike Hazleton, wants to establish a separate charter school that specializes in independent study programs. The new school would target low-income, at-risk students who struggle in traditional school settings. Hazleton says students would take a few courses at a time, at their own pace, in their own space.
Hazleton: "There's a lot of research out there that says that high school should be four hours or less and students should be out in the community - doing field work, volunteer work, community work, or with jobs or internships or things like that."
Some school board members believe the academy doesn't need a separate charter school to provide. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
