New Accountant Hired to Restore City's Finances

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders introduced today the accountant who will guide the city through the Kroll report’s recommendations to help restore order to the city’s finances. KPBS Radio’s Andrew Phelps reports.

The city’s new uber-accountant is John Dyer, a CPA familiar with financial messes. Dyer helped the government implement Sarbanes-Oxley, the corporate accountability law that emerged from the Enron debacle. Mayor Sanders says Dyer is charged with navigating a sea of accounting rules to help act on 121 recommendations from the Kroll report.

Sanders: What John does is he keeps the process driving forward, includes the right people in making those recommendations, and then actually comes up with implementation so that we can tick that off the list and show that we’re moving on with the next one.

Sanders says Dyer is an important navigator but ultimately not a decision-maker. It will be up to the mayor to enact the reforms, and he’s calling for more involvement by the city council. For KPBS, I’m Andrew Phelps.

A big decision awaits some voters this April as the race for San Diego County’s Supervisor District 1 seat heats up. Are you ready to vote? Check out the KPBS Voter Hub to learn about the candidates, the key issues the board is facing and how you can make your voice heard.
