Tom Fudge: Yesterday San Diego’s City Council budget analyst urged the mayor and City Attorney Mike Aguirre to do more to solve the pension fund deficit. A report by Andrea Tevlin suggested specific reforms, such as ending the practice of diverting so-called surplus earnings, from the pension fund, to retiree benefits. Meanwhile, Mike Aguirre was in court yesterday arguing his case for cancellation of recent pension benefit increases. Aguirre, and his backers, argue the benefits are illegal. If Aguirre’s case is successful, it could solve a significant part of the city’s pension deficit problem.
