A new report finds there are fewer non-credentialed teachers in California today, but that’s one of the few bright spots in statewide teaching trends. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
The Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning finds close to 18,000 teachers in California lack credentials. That’s a significant decline compared to six years ago, when more than 42,000 educators failed to meet state teaching qualifications. But researcher Harvey Hunt says there’s still cause for concern. He says more teachers today are taking internship programs which allow them to teach while they pursue their credentials.
Hunt: These folks are still in preparation to be teachers, they are not fully qualified. They’re training on the job.
Hunt says getting qualified teachers is key to making sure the state meets federal student achievement standards. The report also finds about 100-thousand teachers are expected to retire in the next several years, at the same time the number of people entering the teaching profession is declining.
