A violent Tuesday night in Tijuana has depleted the Red Cross’s blood supply. Red Cross officials in Tijuana say it’s the fist time this year that their reserves have dipped so low. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has details.
Two police officers whose bodies’ were riddled with bullets and five people who say they were severely beaten by kidnappers arrived at the Red Cross in Tijuana Tuesday evening. The police officers were bodyguards for the Director of Investigations for the state police. All three were ambushed by gunmen in a Tijuana neighborhood. About 170 shots were fired.
One of the men who said he was kidnapped also had a gunshot would from a separate incident.
Red Cross spokeswoman Rocio Galvan says the evening drained her agency’s supplies. She says they have enough blood left to cover a normal week.

But she says this of year there’s more accidents. And she says it seems like the number of shootouts is on the rise.
State police says 354 people have been murdered in Tijuana this year. Amy Isackson, KPBS news.
