Some 30,000 surgeons from around the world are in San Diego this week, for a meeting of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
It's the world's largest meeting of orthopedic surgeons. And this week at the San Diego Convention Center, surgeons are boning up on some of the latest procedures and diagnostic techniques. Dr. Thomas Sculco is with the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. He says he never misses the Academy's annual convention.
Sculco: I've been in orthopedic surgery for over 25 years. I always come away with three or four new ideas, in terms of how I take care of my patients, and ideas for continued research.
The meeting includes sessions on gene therapy, and advances in combat orthopedic surgery. An Academy spokesman says orthopedic surgeons need to balance their ability to make a comfortable living with the opportunity to do some good. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
