A Chula Vista teacher is nationally recognized for his innovative use of cable television in the classroom. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
An education foundation known as Cable in the Classroom nominated Eugene Yee for its annual excellence award. Yee established a cable channel at Hedenkamp Elementary School where students act as pint-size reporters and engineers. They produce a live newscast that's broadcast throughout the school. Yee says his students have developed important analytical skills.
Yee : If they make a mistake its seen by one-thousand students and the pressure is on to do it correctly, and to plan and to be prepared and that aids their English language fluency, that aids their critical thought process.
Yee uses a big-screen TV in his classroom to critique students’ work and to tune into 24-hour news networks and documentary channels. Parents and teachers say it’s no wonder Yee uses television as a teaching tool. That's because he launched a number of cable TV networks in San Diego before he became a teacher.
