Tom Fudge:
Yesterday, the Solomon Islands were hit with a tsunami that claimed more than a dozen lives. The wave was triggered by a magnitude 8 earthquake, located 215 miles northwest of the Solomon Islands capital city of Honiara. The wall of water was said to be 16 feet high, and it traveled half a mile inland, on the islands it hit.
The danger of tsunamis is a fact of life for any coastal community. And we've got a few of those in San Diego County. At least one of them does have a tsunami response plan. By this summer, Imperial Beach is expected to become the only city in the San Diego County to be certified "tsunami ready" by the NOAA. That's the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
