Leaders Want Immigrant Sweeps Halted Until Congressional Reforms Solidify

Religious leaders and immigrants' rights activists are urging federal authorities to halt the immigration sweeps that netted more than 350 illegal immigrants in San Diego County during the last two weeks. Activists gathered outside the federal building Thursday afternoon and used various religious themes to convey their message. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has the story.

Religious leaders from around the county washed six migrant workers' feet and blessed them on this Holy Thursday.

In ancient times, foot washing was an act of hospitality.

Scott Richardson, Dean of Saint Paul's Episcopal Cathedral : And it was on this day that Jesus gathered with his friends for the last supper, and he stopped and got down and washed all of his disciples' feet.

Richardson says Jesus' act shocked his disciples because servants normally performed the job.

Richardson : So we are here today to wash the feet of those who, in many ways, are the servants of our community, and all too often disrespected.

Religious leaders asked federal authorities to hold off on more immigration sweeps until Congress hashes out immigration reform. They say they'll meet with the head of deportation operations in San Diego later this month.
