National City passed an ordinance last night restricting the operation of diesel trucks. Parents and teachers had complained about a truck driving school being too close to an elementary school. KPBS reporter Ed Joyce has more.

The National City ordinance makes it against the law for diesel trucks to idle or practice training exercises within 100 feet of a school or home. A local truck driving school used streets near Kimball Elementary School. Parents complained about the exhaust.

LoPresti : In this neighborhood the zoning allows both industry and residential to coexist. And there are close to 100 industrial businesses that are contaminating in the Old Town neighborhood.

LoPresti says National City is moving forward with a plan to change the zoning in the Old Town neighborhood. He says San Diego's Barrio Logan neighborhood is another area where diesel exhaust hurts the health of residents.
