TJ Police Absolved of Dirty Gun Allegations, But Not Collusion

Federal authorities in Mexico say the Tijuana Municipal Police force's guns are clean. The long awaited test results conclude events that left Tijuana's local force with a black eye last January. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has the story.

Federal police swept into Tijuana at the start of the year to crackdown on drug cartels and organized crime.

A day later, they took away all 2,300 local police officers' guns.

Federal officials wanted to run ballistics tests on the weapons to see if they were tied to any of Tijuana's high profile crimes.

Federal authorities had long alleged corruption runs thick through the city's municipal police. This week, a Tijuana police spokesman says his agency finally received word their guns have been absolved.

However, almost simultaneously, new questions about corruption in the local force have surfaced.

State investigators say a Municipal Police supervisor provided protection for a group of kidnappers. Local police officials plan to answer questions during a press conference in the next few days.
