Smokers will soon have a tough time finding a place to light up in this east San Diego suburb.
The City Council voted 4-0 Tuesday to ban smoking in all public places where nonsmokers are likely to be, with some exceptions. The new rules - the strictest in San Diego County - are scheduled to take effect Sept. 13, subject to a second council vote next month to reaffirm the policy.
The law prohibits smoking at outdoor restaurants, outside the courthouse or while walking down a crowded street. People will be allowed to smoke in homes, backyards and patios, unless they are in an apartment or condominium complex where the patio is less than 20 feet from a common area, such as a pool or laundry room.
The El Cajon law is based on one adopted in Calabasas, north of Los Angeles.
Police officers aren't expected to patrol for violators, but lawbreakers could face fines of up to $500. The council agreed to waive fines for six months after the law takes effect.
The council also decided to establish smoking outposts in the downtown area during popular events, including a weekly car show.
