Jodie Foster as Erica Bain in The Brave One (Warner Brothers)
In The Accused, Jodie Foster played a rape victim who eventually found retribution through the legal system. In The Brave One (opening September 14 throughout San Diego) , Foster is again a victim, this time of a brutal attack that claims the life of her fianc and leaves her hospitalized. But this time the courts provide no justice and Foster's character becomes a reluctant vigilante.
The Brave One arrives on the heels of Death Sentence , the story of a man who takes the law into his own hands after an urban gang kills his son. Both films arrive amid reports of a downturn in crime in many places yet there seems to be an upsurge in uncertainty as Americans try to cope with issues of global terrorism. Could these very personal stories of revenge and retribution be a way of acting out a desire to get the bad guys on a much bigger scale?
