The new year also means new laws in California. These Days legal analyst Dan Eaton outlines some of the important -- and interesting -- laws that took effect on January 1, 2008.

Legal Update: New Laws You Should Know Starting 2008

Tom Fudge: On Friday, Jan. 4, I'll be celebrating my birthday. But I won't be able to bring my friends, and a couple of 12-packs of beer, to the beach in San Diego. Because that's the day when the city's new ban on beach alcohol use begins.

The new year is a time for new laws. And 2008 will bring new rules at the beach and new statewide laws that impact drivers, smokers, undocumented immigrants and others.
