Tom Fudge: San Diego is a city that many of our listeners love living in. But if we follow politics we certainly have reservations about the way the place is run. The city's billion-dollar-plus pension deficit is Exhibit A. We're not sure whose fault this is. To some extent it's the fault of all of us. It's our city, after all. But we do have a mayor who is accountable for making things better. His name is Jerry Sanders.
He's the first strong mayor in modern San Diego history; one that's an actual chief executive, rather than a glorified member of the city council. Jerry Sanders just delivered his third State of the City address from the newly refurbished Balboa Theater, and this year he's up for re-election.
