Red Cross Says Hotel Spending Oversight May Take Weeks to Resolve

The American Red Cross says it could take weeks to get refunds from some San Diego hotels. The charity acknowledged spending tens of thousands of dollars on rooms for volunteers during last October's wildfires. But the rooms were never used. KPBS reporter Andrew Phelps has more.

The Red Cross's Laura Howe says the charity can't explain the oversight. Howe says the Red Cross is re-evaluating its contract with the agency that reserved the rooms. But she says the Red Cross makes no excuses.

Howe : We understand that this is our mistake that we need to take responsibility for.

The American Red Cross is under pressure to reveal exactly how much it spent on the rooms. Howe says that will have to wait.

Howe : We're not going to release even a ballpark figure because frankly until we finish the process with the hotels, that number could change significantly, and so it's really in flux until we try to, try to work the process through.

The Red Cross spent about $16 million on disaster relief during the wildfires.
