San Diego Assessor Lowers Property Tax Bills for Wildfire Victims

More than 1,400 property owners in San Diego County are getting a tax break.

More than 1,400 property owners in San Diego County are getting a tax break.

Reassessments related to the October wildfires are saving those homeowners about $3.1 million in property taxes this year. It averages about $2,193 a year for each fire victim.

But the tax break is temporary for owners of homes destroyed or seriously damaged by fire. The assessor can raise taxes back to previous levels once the property is restored.

The reassessments represent a small fraction of the county's 1.1 million properties and provide less than one-tenth of 1 percent of the county's nearly $4 billion in annual property tax revenue.
