San Diego County college students say proposed budget cuts to California's higher education will force public universities to act more like private institutions. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the story.
The students say the Governor's 10 percent cut to higher education will result in fewer college classes, less state financial aid, and it would force public universities to rely heavily on student fees.
For example, a report finds the University of California would have to jack up fees from $7,000 to $10,000. That could go up to $18,000 in just a few years.
Student Mauro Lara says poor and middle class students will be priced-out.
Lara: It’s turning into a system that's going to require so much private investing and private funding. That the end result is going to be an education that the average person cannot afford. It’s truly ridiculous.
Lara says all of this comes when more students can't secure college loans because of the national credit crunch.
