San Diego Unified school officials will launch a study to determine if there's enough public support to place a school parcel tax on the November ballot. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the story.
The school parcel tax would be levied on San Diego school district residents. It could pay for anything from books to teachers salaries.
District officials say the tax could bring in anywhere from seven to 20 million dollars. They say the extra money would help the district cope with state budget cuts like the one they're facing now.
School trustee Katherine Nakamura says the tax merits further study. She wants district officials to explain exactly where the money would go.
Nakamura: I think the parcel tax is a good ideal. It will help. But I'm a little bit concerned this will be something like the lottery. We get $12 million a year or 16 million dollars a year I believe from the lottery. But yet people are not sure exactly where that goes.
School officials say the community tends to support education. But they realize it will be difficult to pass this measure because taxes traditionally get voted down in San Diego County.
