Tom Fudge: Robert Swan is an Englishman who is definitely inflicted with that age-old love of exploration. In the mid-Eighties he trekked to the South Pole in an effort to successfully recreate the ill-fated journey of Robert Falcon Scott. In 1989 Swan reached the North Pole, making him the first person to ever walk to both poles. Since then he's been awarded the OBE, the Order of the British Empire, by Queen Elizabeth II. Last month, he was a torchbearer in St. Petersburg, Russia for the 2008 Olympic relay.
Today, Swan is engaged in a new adventure: trying to convince the world to solve the problem of global warming. He's in San Diego as part of a round-the-world sailing trip called The Voyage for Cleaner Energy .
Robert Swan will speak today at 4 p.m. at San Diego Mesa College in Room G101.
