Jail officials are revamping their phone system to make sure calls between prisoners and their attorneys are not recorded after defense lawyers began bringing complaints and in some cases threatened to sue.

Authorities unplugged the recording system this week after the complaints that attorney-client privacy rights were being violated.

Public defender Jim McMahon said he learned a recording of one of his calls had been forwarded to prosecutors bringing a case against his client.

Like the old one, it will warn at the beginning of a conversation that the call is being recorded. But it will also provide a secure, non-recorded number than an attorney can call a jailed client back on.
