Federal, state and San Diego fire officials have moved equipment and staff into the county in anticipation of dangerous fire conditions. KPBS Environmental Reporter Ed Joyce has details.
CalFire and Forest Service officials say they've moved additional fire engines, aircraft, and firefighting crews to the county in preparation for any wildfires over the next week.
The agencies made the announcement at a briefing from local, state and federal officials.
San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders says the city is now spending more than $3 million a year to clear 600 acres of brush in canyons and parks near homes and other structures.
He says the city is getting $1 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to clear brush from city-owned property to protect against wildfire.
Sanders:
This new money which can be spent over three years will give us flexibility to adjust our efforts after we evaluate our new, more robust brush management plan.
Fire officials also stressed the need for property owners to create a 100-foot defensible space around homes and neighborhoods.
