San Diego city councilwoman Donna Frye and councilman elect Carl Demaio are calling for reforms to make city government more responsive to the people. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
Frye and Demaio are not on the same side of the political spectrum. But they both believe change is needed to make the council, the city’s legislative branch, an effective check and balance to the executive branch, in other words, the mayor.
Frye says the strong mayor form of government that began two years ago, needs tweaking.
Frye: The strong mayor part of it seems to be moving along ok, the strong council part of it needs some significant adjustment. The legislative branch holds the people’s power. If we do not stand up for our authority we are essentially not standing up for the authority of the public.
Frye says she wants to make it easier for the public to attend council meetings.
And she wants the mayor’s office to be more open with information
Frye and Demaio will announce their proposals later today.
