The California Coastal Commission Thursday approved plans from two cities in San Diego County to put sand on thinning beaches. KPBS Environmental Reporter Ed Joyce has details.
Oceanside and Solana Beach now have the approval to move ahead with five-year sand programs.
Oceanside would place sand each year on South Oceanside Beach from Forster Street south to Kelly Street.
Solana Beach would do the same for beaches south of Fletcher Cove Beach at the western end of Lomas Santa Fe Drive.
The Coastal Commission also approved a plan by Cabrillo Power for a one-time only dredging of up to 500,000 cubic yards of sand from the outer basin of Agua Hedionda Lagoon.
The dredged sand would be placed on North, Middle and South Carlsbad Beaches adjacent to the lagoon.
The natural processes that brings sand to many San Diego beaches are blocked by urban development, jetties and dammed-up rivers.
