With about one week to go until Christmas, donations are up at the San Diego Food Bank . But so is the demand for assistance. KPBS reporter Katie Orr has more.
San Diego residents have come through with more donations of food and cash this holiday season. But Food Bank Board Chair Mitch Mitchell says it will be important to keep the contributions coming in the months ahead.
Mitchell: We’ve looked at it and said that the seasonal jobs that are, that are in existence today, you know all the retailers that staffed up, come January they’re going to start to let those people go and that means that the demand will probably increase more.
Mitchell says the Food Bank assists about 200 thousand people a month and serves more than 19 thousand meals a day. San Diego’s second food bank, Feeding America, is on track to distribute 12 million pounds of food this year, more than double what it had anticipated.
