Author and Poet Maya Angelou Talks About Race & Education In America

Maya Angelou, the world-renowned poet, author, educator and civil rights activist, speaks to These Days about her life's work and the state of race and education in America today.

Tom Fudge : In the early nineties, Maya Angelou became known to many Americans as the woman who read her poetry at the inauguration of President Clinton. But prior to that Angelou was well known to the American arts community as a poet, a memoirist, a music composer and an actress.

She has written about her life, and her tough upbringing in several memoires. The best known may be "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." Ms. Angelou is 80 years old. She's still a professor of American Studies at Wake Forest university in North Carolina. This weekend she'll be in San Diego to speak at the annual National PTA Convention.
