Gay Rights and Labor Groups Protest Clinton's Speech

Former President Bill Clinton is scheduled to speak at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in Downtown San Diego on Sunday. But his appearance is drawing protests from some gay rights and labor organizations. KPBS reporter Katie Orr has details.

The President will speak to the International Franchise Association at the Grand Hyatt. But his appearance has angered some gay rights supporters. Hotel owner Doug Manchester contributed thousands of dollars to support Proposition eight, which outlawed same sex marriage in California. Activist Cleve Jones says gay rights and labor groups have been boycotting Manchester’s hotel since July.

Jones: We’ve been holding rallies and marches at the Manchester off and on since July. And we will be rallying this Sunday. And we still hope that the president will do the right thing and not attend this event at the Manchester Grand Hyatt.

Labor unions are involved in a dispute with the Hotel over working conditions. In a statement to the San Diego Union Tribune, a spokesman for Clinton says he still plans on speaking at the hotel.
