San Diego’s city attorney wants city officials to consider legislation that could allow the seals to stay at the Children’s pool in La Jolla. KPBS reporter Katie Orr has details.
City Attorney Jan Goldsmith says he suggested the city council consider the matter at Tuesday’s meeting. Proposed legislation would amend the 1931 trust designating the beach be used as a children’s pool. Goldsmith says that doesn’t mean the seals would automatically get to stay. But he says it would allow the city to decide how to use the beach and put litigation to an end.
Goldsmith: There’s gotta be an end to these lawsuits. Let the policy makers decide how to use this property. It is in trust for the people of San Diego. It is state lands in trust for the people of California. And San Diego is acting as trustee for the state.
Goldsmith says State Senator Christine Kehoe has indicated she’d introduce the legislation in Sacramento if she has the backing of San Diego’s council and Mayor.
